The Oxford antiques and crafts market

Every Thursday between 9am and 4pm, there is an antiques and crafts market at Gloucester Green in Oxford.  Gloucester Green stands in the middle of Oxford, and is the market square.  It is ideally positioned because the bus station is directly behind the square, so that tourists and locals alike will most likely walk through and get sucked in by the many stalls selling all sorts of weird and wonderful things - vintage clothes, books, jewellery, antiques, musical instruments - you name it, it's there.

I love wondering up and down the rows of stalls, having a look and a rummage and coming across all sorts of little gems!  Also, I love the people-watching aspect - seeing what other people are interested in, watching tourists crowd round one stall, all clamouring to buy the same thing; watching as people try and look at the things on a stall whilst trying not to attract the attention of some over-zealous stallholders...

...And then there's me, surreptitiously taking photos, probably conspicuous by my attempts at trying to be all "cloak and dagger" about it.  I don't know why I do it like this - I think maybe it's because I feel like the stall holders regard me with some suspicion if they see me taking photos of their wares, but there's absolutely no difference in their attitude if I ask them.  I've tried that.  So I'd rather they were blissfully unaware and I'll continue to snap by stealth.

I came away from the market with quite a loot!  This is what I found that took my fancy:

A brooch made of bone.  I think it's an antelope head?

A silver ring.  I love rings.  i'm addicted!  This one is especially nice because it's wide but the metal is thin.

Buttons!  Yellow buttons = double win.  And a darling hand painted wooden button.

The buttons on the left are wooden and navy blue and have an undulating surface.  The vogue ones are plastic I think but they look wooden.  Gorgeous.

Ribbon is my other addiction besides rings and buttons.  And it's just lucky that the lovely Alice sells ribbon on her stall at the market so I head straight to her to get my fix!

I'll leave you with another photo I took during my market visit.  It was a deliciously warm and sunny morning, and some people couldn't resist the urge to have a little nap in the sun:

Bless 'im!

See you all soon for a little crochet update....

Love, emmalemonade x x x
